The Jaguar S Type was launched in 1963 as the replacement for the beloved dated Mk 2. These were the smallest Sport Saloons in the lineup, with drivetrain and chassis borrowed heavily from the legendary XKE. In fact the 3.8 S provided such a dynamic driving experience it came to be known as the 4-door E-Type. It of course differed from the two seater in that it was a very well appointed and luxurious 5 passenger car and every bit a Jaguar with impeccable road manners, finest materials and iconic beauty. The US versions were all equipped with a twin carb version of the XKE's 3.8 liter double overhead cam straight six cylinder engine and its ground breaking independent rear suspension. In an effort to provide balance the S Type features twin 8 gallon fuel tanks mounted in the fenders behind the rear wheels. Rated at 220 horsepower this engine endowed the S Type with power enough to give the driver the ability to explore the capabilities of the chassis. These cars handle exceptionally well for the era while still feeling safe and predictable at speed. Steering is assisted, the brakes are not. This example was owned and restored by a long term owner who believes the 76k miles indicated are correct. That restoration was completed almost ten years ago, and was highlighted by a bare metal glass out respray, thoughtful attention to the interior, installation of rack and pinion steering and a thorough mechanical refresh. The car has always been maintained timely by the passionate Jaguar owner with tools and skills. In fact that previous owner disassembled and reassembled the car over the 3-4 year undertaking. Inside, creature comfort abounds. The leather seats are comfortable and supportive. In fact the front seat has six way adjustments to accommodate drivers of all sizes. Arm rests front and rear. The cabin features plenty of ways to introduce fresh air including a cowl vent and the elegant and very unusual rear wing windows. Three point front seatbelts, numerous cabin lights and working AM/FM radio. The S Type that was offered from 63-68 found itself stuck between series that competed for the same buyer. It was discontinued and replaced by the worthy and venerable XJ6. But the very thing that challenged its sales make it all the more intriguing as a great value for a better car, compared to the coveted old school MK 2. This 3.8 S presents very well, and considering how well it has been maintained it may be as nice a driver as you will find. It has its shares of scuffs, scratches and age spots its earned from dedicated use. It runs great but as you should expect it will leave a bit of oil and a bit more transmission fluid on the ground after a hard days work. Its been quite reliable and with the big back seat and voluminous rear boot it proves to be quite versatile for a classic collector car. She starts up easy. Idles steady. Shifts through the gears as it should. Steering is spot on and brakes are firm but will pull the car down when needed. The motor is healthy and up for the task, if spirited Sunday drives are your thing. And it has a leaping feline adorning its bonnet.
